AN INVITATION FROM THE SAVANNAH FOLK MUSIC SOCIETY!

Old-Time Country Dances: Fun for the Whole Family The Savannah Folk Music Society will hold an Old Time Country Dance on April 11th at Note Dame Academy gymnasium. Tybee folks who enjoy dancing will have a great time on the hardwood floor in lines (contra dancing), squares, circles and reels, as well as couples dancing (waltzes). These dances are held ten months a year (July and August are just too hot!) and twice in January. They are fun for the entire family and no experience is required. Lessons are given fifteen minutes before dance time and each new dance is preceded by a walk-through. You don’t even have to bring a partner as many unattached dancers are present. Like many country dances, the tunes and the steps find their origins in the English countryside and courts of France at the end of the seventeenth century. These dances spread to other parts of Europe and to the New England area of the new world. They have been preserved and modified over time with Western, Cajun and other influences. The music is provided by a live string band, often the “house band” called the Glow-in-the-Dark String Band, and guest bands are featured as well. Callers let the dancers know the steps. Its great fun, great exercise and a great Saturday night social. The venue is at 1709 Bull Street in Savannah and the dancing starts at 8:00 PM. Admission is only $7 general public and $5 for SFMS members. For more information, contact Hank Weisman at 786-6953 or hgweisman1@aol.com.
NOTE: With the support of the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs, the Savannah Folk Music Society is able to present quality performances and other events.

Hey, Tybee Teens!
Looking for something to do? Try Songwriting for Fun and “Profit!”
Anyone under twenty years of age who likes to write songs may compete for the $1,000 in prizes awarded to the top three contestants in the 2009 Youth Songwriting Competition. Even more, the winning song will be performed at the 20th annual Savannah Folk Music Festival’s grand finale, a concert featuring international singer/songwriter standouts, like Ms. Janis Ian.
There is plenty of time to work on your song as entries are not due until Sept. 1 2009. By then, the song should be put on CD or tape and submitted. Finalists will then be notified and asked to present their songs at the Finals of the competition on Saturday, October 10, 2009. The Concert at Grayson Stadium, where the winning song is performed on the big stage, is Sunday, October 11th.
What is required? A song in the tradition of American folk ballads with the contestant’s original melody and words. No percussion or backtracks, please! The contestant may present the song solo, with accompanist(s) or even have it performed by someone else. What is judged is the song, not its presentation.
The contest and the entire Festival come from the volunteer members of the Savannah Folk Music Society. AMR Music sponsors the prizes – three gift certificates to their stores. The events are also supported by the City of Savannah’s Cultural Affairs Department. For more information Call: 912-786-6953, or visit us on the web at: www.savannahfolk.org.
