On Tybee Road: "Spring" tides on Monday evening, June 22nd, 2009 covered the roadway with shallow waves in several spots along Hwy 80 East between Fort Pulaski and Bull River Bridge. Such astronomical high tides caused by the moon's close proximity to the earth at this time of year have been further accentuated by this month's new moon falling at the same time, and the combo effect may last for several more days. Six inches of water actually closed Tybee Road on June 23rd as the tides reached 10 feet or more, flooding the roadway from Lazaretto Creek to Bull River. But as of June 25th, predictions were that flooding will subside as the moon's influence increases throughout the weekend. (Photo taken around 8:40PM on June 22nd by Cynthia Kinkel.)
